The unicorn food trend has taken social media by storm, even Starbucks jumped on this rainbow trend with their unicorn drink. Rainbow food is of course fun and pretty, but much of this food trend includes food dyes, artificial flavors, and more chemicals which are no fun to our digestive system.
Using whole foods is a great way to change the color of your food while adding nutrition and avoiding added chemicals. I toasted a whole grain sprouted bagel and had fun flavoring my organic cream cheese. If you are looking to explore the unicorn rainbow food craze, here are some whole food ways to color your food:
Red & Pink: Beet juice, beet powder, pomegranate juice, blended currants or raspberries mix great into the cream cheese.
Orange: carrot juice, goji berries (they look red but when they sit in hot water they create a pretty orange liquid), or sandalwood powder.
Yellow: Honestly all you need is turmeric powder! a little powder goes a long way to coloring the cream cheese to a bright sunny yellow.
Green: Spirulina, chlorella, matcha powder, or juiced spinach all do a nice job of giving you a pretty green color. If it’s a bluer green color as can be sometimes based on the brand of spirulina or chlorella, then add a little yellow base (a touch of turmeric) and it will give you a brighter green.
Blue: Is a harder color to achieve. I find I need to use supplements to make this happen unless you have blue potatoes and a juicer and let them sit overnight (which works pretty good). Dried Clitoria Ternatea powder or Blue Majik from E3Live does the job.
Purple: Blueberries, blackberries, and maqui powder all when blended with water create a nice purple color.
Another option I like if you are wanting to make rainbow food in a hurry is the Plant-Based Organic Food Dyes from Blue Chai. These ready to color powders are easy to mix into anything in seconds leaving you with organic & natural colored foods. The Unicorn food craze may come and go, but finding a way to have fun with it and keep it healthy is key.
